Skywarn teleconference 7/31

Hi all,

For anyone interested, there is a virtual SKYWARN talk to review the severe weather event in Vermont that occurred on July 8th. This event is free and open to all, hosted by the National Weather Service in Burlington: https://www.weather.gov/btv/July8thSevreEventReview

Field day summary, July meeting update, general club news

Another Field Day in the books! With a minimal, socially-distanced crew setup at the Barre Rec field, W1BD operated as a 3A station running on 100% emergency power. With the original plan to run a remote station via the Internet for 6 and 10 meters, unfortunately we did not have this setup in time, so we apologize to anyone who wished to participate in that portion of the club station.

We encourage everyone who operated at home that wishes to submit a log to add CVARC as an affiliate club. However, in order for the ARRL to accurately aggregate the scores, please use the following format when submitting a log:
Central Vermont Amateur Radio Club
Exactly as shown, each word capitalized. As long as all operators sending in logs agree, all CVARC members will be listed under the combined score. No abbreviations or shorthand (CVARC or Central VT ARC, et al.) should be used. Thank you!

As is standard for July, we normally skip the first of the month due to the Independence Day holiday. Although today is only the 1st, we are going to be holding our July meeting next Wednesday, July 8th at 6pm, using Jitsi video conferencing. This platform does not require an account, so anyone may join by computer or phone. We will add the link in a different post closer to the meeting date. Please contact us with any questions.

As you may know, the club was set to participate in a few public service events for foot races around VT, namely the VSECU Point to Point, Northfield Savings Bank annual 5K, Groton Forest Trail Run, and the Corporate Cup. As of now, they have all been cancelled. These races comprise a good deal of the club activity for the fall. As difficult as it can be to plan events around the stay home, stay safe orders from the State of Vermont, I believe we as hams can be creative and adaptive to the situation, and continue to find ways to participate in amateur radio with CVARC as a whole. For this, I pose the following question: What activities can we plan that allow everyone to participate while still staying safe? I think ham radio is the best hobby for this! Some have proposed a “worked all CVARC” contest on the air, HF, through repeaters, etc. Another idea is to host a “digital net” on the Williamstown repeater, making use of the P25 digital mode capabilities. I’d encourage everyone coming to next week’s online meeting to think of one or two ideas of what we could do.

See you next week!
